artist statement.

There is no other medium that better connects me to myself and the world than through directing live theatre. I am most articulate about how I view the world when creating in this medium. It is like magic, to get to watch yourself put together a living puzzle.
I aim to create works that make others feel this magic, even if it is only for a brief hour and a half. To sit in a theatre and feel seen, whether in humor or vulnerability, and to not even think about looking down at their phone as they are so engaged in what is happening in front of them. I want people to want to look at what is in front of them.
Oftentimes, these works thematically explore the discovery and embodiment of identity through concepts like memory, dreams, nostalgia, and the passage of time. Some of my favorite elements in a production are heightened theatricality, absurdist dialogue, mixed media, and surreal atmospheres created through whimsical design. Yum.
My goal is to explore the complex feelings and emotions one might have never been able to articulate with words alone, and to dissect the feeling onstage. This requires intentional presence with the story or feeling, along with an incredible attention to detail. Often taking from the unconsciousness and letting it take form.I am attracted to playful and imaginative art which still provides societal and philosophical commentary, examining theatrically what it’s like to walk through everyday life.
This is rarely limited to or rooted in reality.

The fluid and ever evolving liminal moments are achieved by my desire to create an uncluttered yet maximalist climate on the stage. Through movement and design, my aim is to conjure up not only a production of a play, but an entire living environment. One with its own air, stars, temperature, colors, language, living beings and rules.
However, creating an entire tangible world requires a team, the role of a director is not a solitary one. As an interdisciplinary theatre maker, I prioritize my collaborators and love for other mediums when I approach a new process. Incorporating the many creative voices I’m fortunate to have in my sphere, I strive to promote an art making process which rejects the need for worry and self consciousness for the entire team. Each collaborator has a unique voice in which I take seriously to uplift. It is a very vulnerable thing we do together, and the only way we can become open and intimate with our imagination is if we feel comfortable and supported by those around us. As a director, it is incredibly important to me that everyone on the team feels that they are there for a reason. To create a fusion of different mediums cannot be done for the sake of doing it, but to find a complimentary cohesion within them.
I believe humans tell stories in an attempt to organize the chaos of human experience into meaningful patterns, to feel less alone, to validate our experiences, and to deepen our understanding of one another. Theater, in particular, offers a powerful opportunity for us to exercise our judgment and empathy, it is fundamentally an interpersonal and collaborative art form. Our work is a product of genuine connection, and how beautiful it is to explore the theme of genuine connection while simultaneously experiencing it.
